Vectorizing is not converting

An ordinary image is a grid of pixels: enlarge it and you see the pixels. An SVG describes curves and colours as formulas, so it is drawn at whatever size you need and always comes out sharp — the same file works as a 16 px favicon and as a three-metre banner. That is why logos are kept as SVG.

Tracing an image reinterprets it rather than translating it. Converting a PNG to WEBP preserves the information and can be undone; here a program looks at the pixels and decides where there is an edge and where there isn't, and that decision cannot be reversed. The result is a new drawing that resembles the original, not the original in a different wrapper.

So it works very well on logos, icons, silhouettes, stamps and large type — clean shapes, few colours, defined edges — and quite badly on photographs, gradients and fine textures. A vectorized portrait produces a huge SVG that looks like a screen-printed poster; that is not a fault of the service, it is what tracing a photo means.

If your image is a photo and what you want is the shape of what's in it, the silhouette option is the way: the model separates the object from the background first, and only that outline gets traced — which is a clean shape.

Common questions

Which images vectorize well?
Logos, icons, silhouettes, stamps, signatures and large type: anything with few colours and clear edges. The cleaner the starting image, the cleaner the SVG.
Can I vectorize a photograph?
You can, but the result won't look like the photo: gradients turn into patches of flat colour and the file comes out heavy. If what you want is the shape of the object, use the silhouette option instead of tracing the whole photo.
What's the difference between black and white and colour?
Black and white traces a single curve over the image reduced to two tones: clean paths and a light file, ideal for a one-colour logo. Colour stacks several flat colour layers, which is what several inks need and what makes the SVG heavier.
Why is the SVG edge jagged or covered in dots?
Because the tracing follows the noise in the image. Raise “drop speckles” to remove small loose shapes, and try moving the threshold: most dirty edges are fixed with those two controls.
Can I edit the SVG afterwards?
Yes, it's an ordinary curve file: it opens in Illustrator, Inkscape, Affinity Designer or Figma, where you can change colours, move nodes or delete loose shapes.
